Intro to Development Sectors

Renewing Our Vision is an update of our Comprehensive Plan. One aspect of the plan that we have been busy updating over the last month is the development sector map.

What are these development sectors we talk about? Development sectors help us understand how suitable an area is or how much potential there is for growth and development based on existing and planned transportation facilities as well as the relationship to the natural environment. While the development sectors do not specify the type, shape, or size of development, they identify a range of intensity appropriate for an area and as a whole, provide a method for assessing the county in the “big picture” sense.

Why are they important? Development sectors are important because they visually identify what land has important natural features that should be protected and what land is most suitable for future development.

How did we create them? The development sectors are based on an analysis of natural resources and transportation capacity. We used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the location of natural resources and the road network to give us a sense of how well an area can handle traffic, support people, and whether building in the area would impact natural resources that keep us safe and healthy. In the future this analysis could be expanded to include additional indicators for other public services such as sewers and schools or even fiscal impacts.

What’s next? At the upcoming workshops, we’ll be showing you maps based on the development sector analysis and asking your opinion on how to develop in the future. Your input will inform the recommendations for Renewing Our Vision, the first step in the Growing Forward process.
